A lot of us are about to enjoy two or more weeks’ worth of time off work / school. While some of this time will go towards family and friends, it is also an opportunity to invest more time into the languages that are dear to us and planning my language goals for the next year.
Here is my recipe for perfect language-learning bliss on a work-free day:
Starting my morning by leisurely reading the news in a foreign language - the free TransOver plugin makes this nearly effortless
Following up by the obligatory Anki (flashcards) session while basking in the light of my huge sun lamp and enjoying some caffeine. Note: I don’t generally study till there are no more cards, just until the effort of studying outweighs the comfort of sitting like this, which can be anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
Browsing social media for the latest content (I have deliberately followed a bunch of target-language accounts), giving myself permission to get sucked into any rabbit hole in sight, as long as it is in the target language
On some days, researching and cooking/baking a foreign recipe for my family
Doing some light housework while listening to a podcast or radio in my target language
Curling up on the sofa by the fireplace for a bit of textbook study or a target-language book
Having a call with friends speaking my favourite languages, or chatting with them on Whatsapp / Telegram
Another quick (5-10min) Anki session in the early evening, just to cement any words that I didn't remember in the morning.
Finishing the day with a movie in one of my languages, with subtitles so it's effortless
Some more social media and rabbit holes until I'm ready to fall asleep
BLISS!
